The Hunt for Happiness

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The Society is celebrating the 9th Annual Hunt for Happiness Week. And yes, there are a few lucky people who never seem to need to hunt for happiness. So, if that’s you just ignore this post.

But for the rest of us, there are days and moments when we have to hunt for happiness. Personally, quick happy boosters from me include listening to a happy song, calling a friend that makes me laugh or lets me vent, chatting on Facebook or Twitter, playing with Tater, or helping someone. If a black cloud rains on my parade I do something to change my mood instead of ignoring it. And sometimes, depending on the cause of the unhappiness, I have to sit in the storm, get wet, and wait to dry off before moving on. But that’s a different post. This one is about the storms that you can easily get out of.

One type of gloomy mood happens when there’s nothing really wrong in your life. Instead it’s because you have a heart. Something sad is happening to someone you love. Or you see something unhappy on the news and feel virtually helpless to do anything. Like the earthquake in Haiti. You can pray or donate time or money, but that alone doesn’t fix the problem. It’s bigger than one person. Speaking of Haiti, all profits from Society sales this week will go towards relief efforts for the earthquake survivors.

Giving, one of the 31 Types of Happiness, is one of the best things I can do to cheer myself up when I’m sad about something big or small. Giving is when you expect nothing in return for your time, money, empathy, or stuff. When you expect something back from your giving, well, that’s a trade not a gift and probably not a happiness booster.

The next type of black cloud that follows us is the unhappiness that results from everyday life chaos. Fighting the fight, surviving the day, or as my friend Lafferty Johnson calls it, playing The Big D!ck Contest. Can you get rid of this cloud? Not all of it. Can you ignore it? Not all of it. Can you happily co-exist with it? Usually. This is when your attitude counts. What are you going to focus on? Are you going to enroll in Misery University or just stroll by the admissions office.

Most of the time happiness is all around us. But sometimes it’s not easy to latch onto. Sometimes the chaos seems bigger and we need to hunt for happiness or we’ll miss it.

During Hunt for Happiness Week here’s your happiness challenge: Try something new each day. Can’t think of anything? Here are seven suggestions:

1. Pass out the Secret Society of Happy People I-Spy Coupons when you seem someone else have a happy moment. (This is borrowed happiness–one of the 31 Types of Happiness.)

2. Call a friend or relative you haven’t spoken to in at least 3 months.

3. Try a new recipe or restaurant.

4. Take a long bubble bath.

5. Find a new song that makes you want to dance.

6. Stop by that store you want to check out just because.

7. Instead of complaining about that annoying co-worker say something nice and mean it. (Creates happy karma.)

Let us know how you are celebrating Hunt for Happiness Week. Happy Hunting!!!

The Soulfulness of Happiness

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

My favorite thing about happiness is that in the exact moment that you experience it, even when it’s short lived, that moment unites the soul with everything. It connects us with God.

A genuinely happy person radiates. Their soul glows. Their eyes twinkle. Their smile lights up a room. It can’t be faked. That’s why we get annoyed with people who pretend to be happy when they aren’t. We know it’s not genuine.

Happiness is a soulful experience that we crave. And sometimes we’ll trade genuine happiness for its counterfeit. We think it is stuff. Or power. Or money. Or titles. Or people. It’s not. If our happiness isn’t found within, it’s fleeting and our soul aches.

When you’re happy, you only want the best for others. When you’re happy, you want to achieve the best for yourself. When you’re happy, you can’t be unhappy in the same moment.

You can and will be unhappy in different moments, but not the exact moment that you are happy. It’s impossible.

That’s why recognizing happiness is so important. Genuine happiness opens the door to positive solutions. To forgiveness. To inspiration. To hope. To love.

Our soul wants to feel all of the positive things that happiness is the gateway too. And the more happiness we recognize, the more soulful moments we experience.

SOHP: Where Happiness Meets Reality

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Happy Birthday to SOHP!!!

Happy Birthday to us! The Secret Society of Happy People is 11 years old today. Our first, non friend or relative of mine, official lapel pin membership order came snail mail from Lawrence, Kansas. That’s why August 8th was chosen as the first Happiness Happens Day–it’s our birthday. Maybe I’ll get a birthday dessert somewhere today.

Since the beginning, the SOHP mission has been simple: identify and talk about happiness more, parade-rain less (unnecessary negative communication).

The SOHP isn’t about promoting Pollyannaism. It’s not about ignoring unhappiness. The Secret Society of Happy People is where happiness meets reality.

Some believe being happy is always about a choice, or that you should always think positive. Many think it’s about religion–just look at all the comments on the USA Today story that the SOHP was included in.

Personally, I think happiness is more complicated. It’s personal. It’s circumstantial. We all pick a happiness philosophy that we try to live by. It changes as we change.

For me, happiness is about moments. Therefore, I believe happiness happens, but unhappiness happens, too. And being mostly happy, is about how we co-exist with the unhappiness. If we’re not careful, unhappiness consume us. It shouldn’t. Lots of things that make us unhappy are really pretty insignificant. We won’t even remember them weeks or months from now. We may not remember them tomorrow. I had that experience at my day job on Friday. I was quite agitated over something that I won’t remember next week. I gave insignificant unhappiness, some of my happy moments. My poor boss, the beneficiary of my venting.

Many times, happiness is about perspective. If something makes us unhappy all of the time, we should try to make changes. Even if it’s only our attitude. And remember, sometimes when we do something that we didn’t want to, after it’s done, we were glad we did it. And glad is a type of happiness. Happiness isn’t about a doing only what I want life.

And then there are the big unhappy experiences. Losses that change our reality – a loved one dies, our heart is broken, illness strikes, dreams die, our idealistic vision is brought to an un-idealistic reality. These are the unhappy moments we have to co-exist with…maybe forever. But even during these consuming moments of unhappiness, happiness happens.

So how do we find happiness in the midst of unhappiness? For me, it’s counting every laugh, amusing, or amazing moment, every kindness extended to me, borrowing happiness from others, and knowing feeling content, grateful or relief is also happiness. It’s the 31 Types of Happiness. And when I take the time to notice my happy moments, I go to sleep feeling pretty darn happy.
