The Hunt for Happiness

Monday, January 18th, 2010

The Society is celebrating the 9th Annual Hunt for Happiness Week. And yes, there are a few lucky people who never seem to need to hunt for happiness. So, if that’s you just ignore this post.

But for the rest of us, there are days and moments when we have to hunt for happiness. Personally, quick happy boosters from me include listening to a happy song, calling a friend that makes me laugh or lets me vent, chatting on Facebook or Twitter, playing with Tater, or helping someone. If a black cloud rains on my parade I do something to change my mood instead of ignoring it. And sometimes, depending on the cause of the unhappiness, I have to sit in the storm, get wet, and wait to dry off before moving on. But that’s a different post. This one is about the storms that you can easily get out of.

One type of gloomy mood happens when there’s nothing really wrong in your life. Instead it’s because you have a heart. Something sad is happening to someone you love. Or you see something unhappy on the news and feel virtually helpless to do anything. Like the earthquake in Haiti. You can pray or donate time or money, but that alone doesn’t fix the problem. It’s bigger than one person. Speaking of Haiti, all profits from Society sales this week will go towards relief efforts for the earthquake survivors.

Giving, one of the 31 Types of Happiness, is one of the best things I can do to cheer myself up when I’m sad about something big or small. Giving is when you expect nothing in return for your time, money, empathy, or stuff. When you expect something back from your giving, well, that’s a trade not a gift and probably not a happiness booster.

The next type of black cloud that follows us is the unhappiness that results from everyday life chaos. Fighting the fight, surviving the day, or as my friend Lafferty Johnson calls it, playing The Big D!ck Contest. Can you get rid of this cloud? Not all of it. Can you ignore it? Not all of it. Can you happily co-exist with it? Usually. This is when your attitude counts. What are you going to focus on? Are you going to enroll in Misery University or just stroll by the admissions office.

Most of the time happiness is all around us. But sometimes it’s not easy to latch onto. Sometimes the chaos seems bigger and we need to hunt for happiness or we’ll miss it.

During Hunt for Happiness Week here’s your happiness challenge: Try something new each day. Can’t think of anything? Here are seven suggestions:

1. Pass out the Secret Society of Happy People I-Spy Coupons when you seem someone else have a happy moment. (This is borrowed happiness–one of the 31 Types of Happiness.)

2. Call a friend or relative you haven’t spoken to in at least 3 months.

3. Try a new recipe or restaurant.

4. Take a long bubble bath.

5. Find a new song that makes you want to dance.

6. Stop by that store you want to check out just because.

7. Instead of complaining about that annoying co-worker say something nice and mean it. (Creates happy karma.)

Let us know how you are celebrating Hunt for Happiness Week. Happy Hunting!!!

Happiest Events and Moments of 2009 & the Decade

Friday, January 1st, 2010

5. Hostages released and found: Laura Ling and Euna Lee were released from North Korea; Jaycee Dugard was found and reunited with her family after 18 years.

4. Captain Sullenberger became an unexpected, but much needed hero with the Miracle on the Hudson.

3. Twitter became a household name and united millions when brave Iranians tweeted out their version of elections gone bad; and millions of others connected with their 140 character tweets.

2. Susan Boyle reminded everyone it’s not too late to follow their dreams when she competed in Britain’s Got Talent and has sold 2.98 million records.

1. A decade of unhappiness that includes wars, unprecedented natural disasters, recessions, almost financial collapse, increased terrorism, and political unrest finally ends with the hopes of a happier decade beginning in 2010.

Secret Society of Happy People Connections

Friday, November 13th, 2009

We’ve updated the Secret Society of Happy People> home page. We are trying to figure out how to work with all the social media outlets to stay in tough with happy folks who want more contact and not inundate those who want fewer doses of happiness. Here’s the plan (and let me know what you think):

Would you like to get a daily happy quote? If so, visit our homepage and you can see our Facebook Fan Page feed with it’s daily quote. It will also have the links to news and other things you might be interested in on a daily basis. If you’re on Facebook, you can fan SOHP and get the updates there too. Updates are also on Twitter, so if you ad us to one of your lists it’s easy to get the latest Society news. I also added a LinkedIn link. Imagine a group of happy professionals connecting with other happy professionals. We also took away the Google ads–too busy.

This blog will be essays and videos (hopefully I’ll have a camera, Santa are you listening, by January) with my personal take on happiness.

The Society business of the moment is to nominate the Happiest Events & Moments for 2009. What do you think should be on the list?

Also, I’m thinking Scavenger Hunt for Hunt for Happiness Week in January. Anyone want to help?

Until next time here are a couple of stories to increase your smiles: The Best Get-Happy-Foods and 7 Simple Ways to be Happier.

Happiness Happens Month Countdown

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

We’re in our final hours of celebrating the 10th Annual Happiness Happens Month…and wow..it’s been a great one. Happython 09, the USA Today story, web links and numerous radio interviews exposed our not-so-secret Society of Happy People to thousands. And made thousands smile. Thank you for participating.

If you still want to celebrate, send an email to your friends and tell them to check out the Secret Society of Happy People and our Happy Helpers. I really like the SOHP online radio station. It’s a quick pick me up. Also, don’t forget to download your free copy of Recession-Proof Happiness…you can work it anytime–it’s full of ideas to help you notice your happy moments.

For those of you that I’ve known a decade, you know that I usually take a little time off for SOHP stuff in September. However, this year I will be posting happy quotes on SOHP’s Facebook Fan Pageand Twitter. I’m happily learning the world of social media and hope to do more with it, including YouTube this year. Would you like for me to start offering a link to video messages?

There’s still time to get your FREE Cheerful Membership ($10 value), if you order a Society T-shirt by August 31. It’s a great holiday gift. If you already ordered a T-shirt this month, your Cheerful Membership will be mailed by September 1.

Again, thank you for making the world a happier place.

HappyThon 09 Ambassadors

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Happy 4th of July! Hope everyone is having some fun–maybe taking some pictures to share for HappyThon 09 (just a thought).

Plans for HappyThon 09 to kick-off the 10th Annual Happiness Happens Month are coming together better than expected and I’ll be sharing more details soon.

There have been some questions about how to participate.

Everyone is invited to participate. You have friends, co-workers and relatives that you e-mail. One e-mail makes you a HappyThon 09 participant (and I’ll send out a sample e-mail the week before HappyThon 09 that you can forward as is or tweak with your own words). We’ll also have some new stuff on sohp.com that you can share. If you participate in Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or YouTube (plus many more online communities) just do one posting happy posting referencing HappyThon 09 and Happiness Happens Month. Also, remember to follow the Society.

Next most asked question, “If I’m an official HappyThon 09 Ambassador what does that mean?”

It’s easy, send 12 messages about happiness to your online circle. We need HappyThon 09 Ambassadors from every time zone participating. We’ll even send you a HappyThon 09 Ambassador Guide with happy quotes, links and other goodies that you can share.

Also, please follow the Society on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. I always follow back.

To be a HappyThon 09 Ambassador just send an e-mail (if you already responded I’ve got you in the file).

HappyThon 09 is something you can participate in with your kids, grandkids, friends and happy strangers who’ll quickly become friends.

If you have any other questions please ask. If you have suggestions or ideas please share.

THANK YOU for helping create the world’s largest online event for happy people!

HappyThon 09

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Imagine, a day where your e-mail is full of happy news, where the online chatter is about everything happy, where there’s so much online happy chatter that happiness is randomly mentioned in the news, on the radio, and by your friends.

It’s possible. Just think, if:

500 people posted or sent 12 happy messages that equals 6000 happy messages that thoughts more will read

The social media tools of Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, other online communities, and your e-mail addresses, make it possible to chat with thousands of not-so-secretly happy people.

To kick-off, the 10th Happiness Happens Month the Society is going to host HappyThon 09 beginning August 1st in your time zone (we’re global).

Want to participate? Are you eager to connect with other happy people? We need Happiness Ambassadors. What will Happiness Ambassadors do? Send or post 12 happy messages with e-mail, on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or YouTube on August 1st. If you’re willing please send me an e-mail with your country and time zone.

What will we discuss? Everything happy - moments, philosophy, how to’s, pick-me-ups, science, quotes, art, videos, television, songs, books, hobbies, and recipes.

And of course, the goal is to create conversations with other not-so-secretly happy people around the world. It’ll be fun.

Here’s an update of the event details, what you can do to prepare, and questions:

1. Website (www.sohp.com) is being updated.

2. In the process of looking for HappyThon 09 for lack of better word at the moment, partners…happy experts and companies to help spread the word. If that’s you, send me an e-mail.

3. Let your not-so-secretly happy friends know about HappyThon 09 and encourage them to become an Amused Member (it’s free).

4. Follow SOHP on Twitter, Facebook, Facebook Fan Page, and MySpace.

5. Do any of you post to YouTube? We need happy videos. Kim, with I-skip, is considering being a skipping roving reporter and then posting on YouTube.

6. Early time zones…Australia comes to mind, we really need to your help to kick-off the event.

7. T-shirts…thinking about something simple in white with the Society logo–different style for the chicks. Maybe kids too. Any interest?

We’ll be putting together a list of happy songs, books, movies, quotes. If you have suggestions please submit them. I’m also working on two surprises for the 31 Types of Happiness. I want to help you have great content to share.

Which leads us to the media, we’ll start contacting them in early July, so if there’s someone in your community that we should contact let us know.

HappyThon 09 is in the early stages of thought so if you have suggestions tell us.

With so much challenging news, the world needs a little happiness, so now is the perfet time to unite, organize, and create a little happy chatter. Because happiness happens, even in the most chaotic times. More HappyThon 09 information coming soon…

Happiness Happens Month & Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

In August we will be celebrating the 10th Annual Happiness Happens Month…who’d have thunk.  Just being Texas…sorry.

I want us to create a huge social media event.  I want us to have Tweetfests, Facebook Facings, MySpace Music, YouTube videos…and other fun stuff.  I want to get the world thinking about happiness in August.

We need your help.  First, remind all your friends to become SOHP.com Amused Members…it’s free…and I’m usually amusing…right?

Second, third and fourth…

2.  If you’re tweeting, follow us

3.  If you’re on Facebook, friend me.

4.  If you’re on Facebook, become a Society fan.

5.  If you’re on MySpace, friend me (and you can hear our song, What if it All Goes Right?).

6.  If you work for a company or organization, or volunteer somewhere and want to have an official celebration, let me know so we can max the PR opportunity.

We need to be happier…and Happiness Happens Month can bring it out for everyone.

PS…Anyone know anyone who works at Yahoo.com?
