Most people don’t like to toot their own horn but sometimes we have to. It always feels better when we’re recognized for a job well-done by our manager, or better yet, their managers, and our peers. However, work, like life isn’t always ideal so sometimes we have to pat our own backs.
The next time you complete a big project, deal with a difficult customer or internal work situation, or get a win – maybe it’s a new customer, a new partner for your company or even a building a bridge with another department yours deals with – celebrate the success.
If the accomplishment was a team effort then schedule a team lunch or happy hour. If it was a solo effort still go to lunch or happy hour with friends or co-workers. Or consider treating yourself to a massage or take the afternoon to play golf. You get the idea—do something that makes you feel happy.
It’s important to count your successes when they happen — and document them — you’ll need them for your annual review. After all, the next day you’ll be back in the trenches. It’s always nice to have a celebration memory that makes you grin.
