When I was in elementary school one of my favorite holidays was Valentine’s Day. It wasn’t because I got candy, stuffed animals or some other endearing gift from a boy – I rarely had a boyfriend in elementary school.
Instead, I loved the holiday because I got to decorate a valentine box that got filled with cards from classmates. Sometime the cards had sweet treats attached. When I got home, I’d get to read the cards again, and it kinda felt like everyone was my valentine or at least liked me. That felt good – I was a bit of a wallflower in school.
When Valentine’s Day Loses That All-Inclusive Loving Feeling
Fast-forward to junior high and to adulthood, and somehow Valentine’s Day turns into an adults-only holiday for people who have a significant other. It feels exclusive instead of inclusive. In fact, instead of Valentine’s Day being a holiday when everyone feels a little love, it seems to make people without significant others feel lonely.
I’ve even been seeing Facebook posts this month about how Valentine’s Day makes non-coupled people feel sad. I’ve also known people coupled with someone who doesn’t like celebrating the holiday start to question the romance in their relationship because of the hoopla around the day.
Of course, if you’re in a relationship, and you’re both on the same page about how to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s all roses, hearts, and love, with or without the hoopla, pun intended.
A Valentine’s Day Challenge For You
The truth is, Cupids arrow can land on anything or anyone we love on Valentine’s Day. My Valentine’s Day challenge to you is to spend the holiday celebrating your passions. Of course, if you’re with a love–true or temporary—you can celebrate the passion of romance. But what if your partner doesn’t like to celebrate, or you’re single this Valentine’s Day? Ask yourself what makes your heart jump for joy? Those are your passions too.
Consider making a Love List. It might include things like these:
- Kids
- Pets
- Friends
- Family
- Reading
- A memento from your parents
- Cooking for friends & family
- Wine, chocolate, or other favorite treat
- Golf or another hobby
- Watching a sunset
Try to include someone or something from your Love List—whatever or whomever you put on it—for your Valentine’s Day celebration.
Make time to call your best friend or sister for a chat, cook your kid’s favorite meal, or surprise co-workers with cards. If you and your friends are looking for romance, maybe get together for some food and wine to make soulmate dream boards.
The love we can share is so much bigger than being for just one person. It’s sad that as we get older we trade sharing a little love with many for celebrating only romantic love with one on Valentine’s Day.
Cupids Arrow Quiver Is Always Full 🙂
Cupid has lots of arrows, and he can shoot them for you at all your loves on Valentine’s Day. This way, you will, get to feel your heart flutter with the passion you feel for life. This year it’s Lip cookies (shaped like “smoochie” lips) instead of heart cookies. My husband doesn’t like cookies all that much, so I’m bringing them to work.
That may be my cookie party next year … hot lips.
My hubby and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s day as we find it too commercial. We like to celebrate our love all year long and he will surprise me randomly other than having a date tell him he has to, lol 😀 works for us even after 31 years together. Instead I like to surprise girlfriend and complete strangers to a little love. I crochet pink flower pin and give them out. The other day my hubby and I went to get our teethe cleaned and I presented all the women in the office with a flower pin. I figure pink is a safe colour, for what woman does not like the colour pink, lol 😀 The funny thing is I get more from the giving. I brings me great joy! 😀 <3 😀
Four days ahead of Valentines Day this year my husband is already asking me if I want to open one of my gifts. The is not the norm with us but Im not complaining. LOL. So I’m cleaning and organizing his office and just about finished hanging pictures of all of his big jobs he has completed. We are also planning on a very nice romantic dinner evening together.
