Happy Random Acts of Kindness Week!

Although it’s easy to be kind every day, it’s nice to have a celebration week to remind us to make kindness a habit.

When you need a happiness booster doing an act of kindness releases those happy chemicals so it can make at least two people happy.

This past Christmas on the day I was leaving to visit my friends for the holiday, I checked my mail. There was a legal size envelop that didn’t have a return address I recognized.

I almost didn’t open it. But something nudged me to, so I did.

To my shock and delight, it was a personalized letter from Santa. He mentioned my sad year and despite it I was spreading Christmas cheer. And yes, I was on the nice list.

I needed this letter from Santa this year. It was an act of kindness that made me feel good, grateful, and loved.

So, if you know how good it feels to receive a random act of kindness, you’ll want to share that happy feeling with others.

My favorite acts of kindness happen when I do something for someone anonymously. Over the years I’ve:

  • Dropped flowers off to surprise someone
  • Sent Secret Santa gifts
  • Sent an anonymous gift card or cash
  • Bought something that I knew someone wanted and sent it anonymously
  • Donated money to someone’s cause

The hardest part is to keep it a secret if your RAK recipient suspects that you are their kindness grantor–so work on your poker face.

But it feels so good to be a bright spot in someone’s day that it’s worth the effort. Even planning this type of RAK makes my heart patter a bit and my face smile.

Of course, you can do something as simple as smile, hold the door open, or pick up the trash in a neighbors yard.

Kind is also one the of the 31 Types of Happiness.

Kindness is contagious, so this week, try to spread the kindness bug.

Thanks for last weeks cups of coffee–each of you started a smile for me. 🙂

Your mission should you choose to accept it this week is to:

Since it’s Random Acts of Kindness Week–
Do a RAK for someone you know who needs a smile starter,
a stranger, coworker, neighbor, friend, family member, pet
or even someone who is a little cranky.

Even mostly happy people
get a little happier when someone does something kind for them.

???? ???? ????
Fresh flowers reduce stress (see the link in Happy News).

I had to get flowers for an event at my house and picked this boutique that included roses.

These blooms are beautiful and they smell so good that they’ve started many smiles.

Do flowers make you smile? If so, what’s your favorite?

We have a new SOHP Subscriber Resource page with lots of the goodies for you to download.

During the Society’s 20th Anniversary I identified what I learned about happiness for a reporter.

It basically boiled down to the Four Practical Happiness Principles:

  • Happiness Zappers are Manageable
  • Happiness is Personal
  • Happiness Changes as You Change
  • Happiness if Bigger than You Think

Whatever the word practical lacks in excitement, it make up for in reality. A practical approach makes something obtainable and realistic.

These principles are simple, yet it’s not what you know about them that counts. It’s when you apply them that they transform you.

Moving forward we’ll have a little something about the Practical Happiness Principles each week.

To get started, which one do you want to know more about next week?
Some days you just need to need to raise your vibe.

One of the easiest ways to do that is to count your happy moments.

The Society identified 31 Types of Happiness to help you do that. I think of them as Mojo Magnets.

We also have a Happiness Counter you can print in our resource center or it’s on our app at SOHP.

Since it’s RAK week, count the number of times that you either experienced kindness or did an act of kindness.
