hunt for happiness week 2017, secret society of happy people. SOHP.com

Truth Time: no one wants to hunt for happiness, we just want to experience it. If we need to hunt for happiness, it usually means something or even many things have changed. Some changes are simply the result of getting older and wiser. Changes also happen when we achieve a goal we’ve been working toward. Sometimes changes happen because other people change. Changes also result from uncontrollable chaos.

Older & Wiser

Despite our youth-obsessed culture, most of us aspire to get old, gray, and wise. As we get older, our priorities and bodies change. We discover we need more sleep and don’t function as well after all-night parties. We become parents, which completely changes our daily routines and priorities. Old injuries can affect our abilities to train for marathons or do other strenuous workouts. We can’t escape the changes induced by Mother Nature.

These changes can alter the things that make us happy, which isn’t necessarily bad unless we’re resistant to trying new things. When we do, we’ll discover many new things that make us happy. Our past happiness leaves us a priceless nostalgic memory chest to which our present and future experiences add ever-increasing worth.

    Achieving Goals

We all set goals that we believe will increase our happiness when we achieve them. They usually include things like getting a college degree, working for a certain company, getting married, having kids, taking a vacation to Italy, buying a dream car and house, and so on.

Like our bodies, our goals change as we get older and wiser because lives change. Maybe we want to get into shape, understand our retirement investments, or learn to relax, all goals that wouldn’t have interested us in our younger years. The key to happiness is setting new goals – especially after we’ve accomplished old ones. The difference between a goal and a dream are the actions we take to achieve it.

Other People

Being social is important to our happiness. Everyone we know will hopefully become older and wiser which means their lives change just like ours do. Kids grow up. Parents’ age. Friends move away. People die. Our loved ones take different paths to growing older and wiser than we do – meaning, we sometimes lose our connections.

None of us stays the same and relationships with each other change. As we go through different life phases, we should always remain open to meeting new friends and welcoming new family members. In some ways, we’re always hunting for new people to love.

Uncontrollable Chaos

Life will always challenge us with uncontrollable chaos – the unplanned and unexpected will happen. It can be something minor or major. Maybe we get stuck inside for a few days because of a snow storm, get laid off from work, discover someone stabbed us in the back or get a scary health diagnosis.

Although these events are situational, they can impede our happiness momentarily or in the long-term. When we are in the thick of life’s challenges, we have to ask ourselves how the experience betters us; otherwise, we risk becoming bitter.
