Happiness Happens Month 2017 Focuses on Unity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DALLAS, TX (June 9, 2917) – August 1 marks the start of the Secret Society of Happy People’s 18th Happiness Happens Month, and this year, the Society aims to unite people by reminding everyone that our similarities far outnumber our differences. Founder Pamela Gail Johnson has planned a month chock-full of activities that she hopes reminds participants of Edward Kennedy’s words above.
“When I founded the Society in 1998, I did so in part because I believed that the feelings of pain and happiness unite people regardless of differences,” Johnson says. “I still emphatically believe that. We all feel a common euphoria when we laugh with a best friend, fall in love or become a parent. These moments unite everyone regardless of the size of their bank account, their job title or their age.”
The Secret Society of Happy People started celebrating happiness with “Admit You’re Happy Day” on August 8th, 1999. Members wanted to let the happy feeling linger a little longer, so, in 2000, the Society expanded the celebration to the entire month of August and eventually changed the name to Happiness Happens Month. The goal was and is simple: Notice more happy moments and talk about them. The specifics of this year’s programming will be released in between now and August alongside Pamela’s #HappinessUnites list—a list of reminders of the forces that unify all people, regardless of our differences.
“Differences make the world intriguing,” Pamela says. “While our differences will always make us unique, they don’t need to create separation from our common humanity.”
Participants in the month’s daily activities also have the opportunity to take a pledge saying, “I solemnly swear that I am up to nothing but happiness. #HappinessUnites!” Participants who are active on Social Media are encouraged to post videos of themselves taking The Pledge!
