Ask Pamela Gail: Where Happiness Meets Reality

Pamela Gail,

When a tragedy like the one in Boston happens I feel sad, angry, and helpless. However, my life is still normal and I still feel mostly happy but sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be. Is it alright to be happy now?

These sentiments have been shared and these questions asked by many Secret Society of Happy People members

Dear Secret Society of Happy People Members,

When a tragedy like the one in Boston happens we naturally feel an array of unhappy emotions – anger, sadness, helplessness, and even mild depression—However, unless we’ve been personally impacted by the tragedy then we only experience it vicariously. This can still be emotionally draining, but our lives stay relatively normal. Part of that normalcy includes feeling happy if something makes us happy. If we’re mostly happy, then naturally several things will make us happy every day and we should embrace that happiness.

Our emotions are intricate and we can go between sadness and happiness in mere seconds.

Of course, part of happiness is being helpful where we can, giving of ourselves, and expressing spirituality through prayer or meditation. All of these things help us during times of tragedy because they enable us to feel connected to those directly impacted.

During times of national or global loss it’s important for those who can feel happy to do so because happiness enables you to help others heal.

Sending you love, be kind, enjoy the happy,

Pamela Gail
